Summer Scholar Program 2012! This year we welcome 8 new summer scholars, joining us from 5 nationally ranked universities. Our welcome luncheon was held on June 18 and our team kick off meeting was on the 20th. We introduced two digital summer project opportunities. Away we go!

Digital Day

We hosted our first Digital Innovation Day on July 2nd.  It was an opportunity for all of our team members to hear about many of the exciting initiatives within our individual organizations.    What were your key take aways?

  2. My key take away from Digital Day is the newly found use of mobile applications in the business world. Apps can be advantageous to a company in a number of different ways if implemented properly. Also, working so closely with the daigger.com team, I found it interesting to see what the new website will look like and to learn a little about the process behind creating it.

  3. Yes, the new Daigger website is beautiful! I loved the "order pad". It was simple and elegant. I also liked the idea of having the past three purchases listed in a drop down menu for easy re-ordering. I can't wait until all the companies upgrade their websites as well. I thought the presentation on Amazon was wonderful and very insightful. They have an interesting business model. I never realized that they put companies into this position where they are both friends and foes. They are the largest customer of EI and LR, but they are also competition for our other distributors. I guess you can't please them all. The "mobile warming" presentations were also very thought provoking. Right now we're just in the beginning phase of our digital transition. I can't wait until we've fully integrated ourselves in the mobile sphere. Then, again, that could be years from now since it's so ever-changing! I had a great time at Digital Innovation Day. I couldn't be more proud of my co-workers for being final contenders in the contest! Good Luck to everyone!

  4. I really enjoyed listening in on Digital Day 2012. I think it was great that we had the opportunity to listen in on various new digital innovations happening in front of our eyes at all of our companies. Dave Watta and his digital team, along with all of the other speakers, did such a great job of giving insight on all of the latest digital projects. As an avid digital user, I think it is great that all companies are trying to incorporate digital innovations and invest in digital teams. I use technology everyday; I am hooked on my laptop, internet, iPod, and Android phone. Like the intro video said, more and more people are starting to use digital devices everyday and the numbers keep growing. I think it is smart for our companies to consider the data and move ahead. From what I heard and saw today, it seems like our employees have the ideas and skill set to put our companies at the forefront of digital innovation. I'm excited to see what our co-worker's ideas will bring and which product will win the digital day challenge!

  5. Digital Day 2012 was very interesting! I loved that we were able to learn about all the different directions that the companies are headed in the digital world. The most interesting part to me was learning about the development of the apps. The most shocking part of app development was the difficulty of transforming a physical item into the virtual world. More specifically, I was surprised to realize the substantial difference between developing a mobile product instead of a physical one. For example, one major distinction is the many functions of a mobile device, such as voice activation, compared to one's capabilities when making a card game without technology. These small details create a completely new environment and emphasize the dramatic changes happening in the marketplace as we morph into a mobile-based society. My key takeaway from Digital Day was the realization of the vast differences between manufacturing physical products and digital ones and recognizing the exciting challenges that lay ahead.

  6. It was really fun to hear all the presentations on digital day. While terms like 'digital' and 'mobile' have been thrown around since I first arrived at Learning Resources, it was really cool to see actually implementations of website design, apps, amazon cataloging, and more. Yet as much as we are trying to stay on top of the ever growing digital world, the presentations also made me realize the urgency of getting our products and brands out there before it is too late. It was shocking to see the amount of apps that will be available on the market in the time it takes to develop just one game. What needs to be done is develop a new innovative program that entertains, educations, and brings awareness of Learning Resources and the family company brands. I loved hearing the top ideas for the digital contest (some of which I thought about myself) and I am excited to see which ones come to life!
