Another great Scholar Outing. We enjoyed a food tour on Friday, aside from a little rain, the day was perfect- What food did you enjoy most scholars? What cultural nugget did you find most fascinating?

  1. I thought the tour was very well done and all the places we visited were awesome. My favorite food of the day was probably the brat from Berghoff. The cupcakes from Sugar Bliss were also delicious! I ended up taking a box home with me! I found the Pizano/Malnati rivalry very interesting and also got some great photos of the Tiffany domes. Overall, great trip!

  2. As a newcomer to the Chicago area, I really liked learning about classic Chicago foods and how they all tie into the culture and history. I really liked Pizano's pizza and learning about the sibling rivalry between the Pizano's and Lou Malnati's chains that still goes on. I also didn't know that Chicago is the home of root beer (from Berghoff's) and brownies (from the Palmer House). I think one of my favorite foods of the day was the Chicago style hot dog, since I had never tried one before!

  3. The food tour was a ton of fun! I loved learning about the history of Chicago by visiting the various, historical sites. The most interesting stop for me was the first stop for pizza. I loved learning about the history of deep dish pizza in Chicago. I didn't know that deep dish originated from the same family! Other than the pizza, I loved the cupcakes and the Fannie May chocolates. I had a great time spending the afternoon with the other interns and their managers and I would love to do something like that again soon!

  4. The food tour turned out to be a lot of fun, despite the terrential down pour we got stuck in! I loved hearing the story at Pizano's about the rivalry and how deep dish came to be. My favorite spot was probably Fannie may - the apple artisan candy was delicious! It was fun to get to know each other/the managers a little more. Even though I've lived in Chicago nearly all my life, it was a lot of fun to visit "iconic Chicago" restaurants and hear the stories of how they came to be. Like some of the other scholars mentioned, I had no idea root beer and brownies also originated in Chicago. Another one of my favorites was visiting the Palmer House. I've heard so much about it but never went there, so it was cool to finally go inside. I had no idea the Palmer House was also a place for so many firsts - first telephones in each room, first elevators, and first fire proof building. After telling my family about our outing, they really want to do a food tour as well. Hopefully next time I go it won't rain :)

  6. As a proud Chicago native (well, Chicago suburbs) who loves to show around the city to newcomers, it was great to take part in a new outing experience that gives me another reason to brag about the best city in the world. While I had already indulged in most of the featured foods prior to the tour, it was really fun hearing the history behind both the restaurants and their featured products. While my taste buds would rank the Sugar Bliss cupcakes at the top, I also really enjoyed learning the history behind the Malnati family pizza wars as well as how Berghoff adjusted its menu for prohibition. Even with a little rain it was an awesome day to spend with my peers and coworkers out in the city!

  7. I couldn't think of a better way to spend a Friday afternoon than partaking in two of my favorite pastimes: eating and having fun in Chicago. The day was filled with fun facts about Chicago's culinary and cultural heritage. My favorite story was the one about the sibling rivalry between Lou Malnati's and Pizano's. Personally, I think both restaurants champion a unique and different flavor, which leads me not to take any sides; I equally love pizza from both restaurants. I also really loved the Chicago dog - one of my all-time favorite eats in the world - and the adorable and delicious cupcakes from Sugar Bliss, whose frosting tasted like french vanilla icecream...mmm. Lastly, I can't forget about the torrential downpour that drenched everyone during the beginning of the tour. While it was not the preferred weather condition that we wanted, it was still a ton of fun running with our managers, Julie, and Rick through the streets of Chicago. Great, hilarious memories!
